FIDE World Senior Championship Underway
Austria hosts the annual FIDE World Senior Championship for players age 60 and over. GM Anatoly Lein is the American representative. (Lein has scored near the top in the last two events, and is a strong contender for the title.) Standings after 7 rounds: 6.0 GM Ivkov, 5.5 GM Lein, Braun, GM Bagirov, GM Klovans (the defending champion), IM Chernikov, GM Uhlmann, Alexey Sheshtoperov, GM Arkhangelsky, GM Kraidman, GM Suetin, and GM Golyak. In an interview at the site, Klovans explains that his correct has always followed a somewhat later path than most other top players. He did not begin playing until age 14, became a Soviet Master at age 25, and did not become an International Master until age 42. 20 years he became the World Senior Champion and was granted the Grandmaster title for that result. The event lasts until November 23rd. See games and information (in German).
Disney Rapid Chess This three day event brought together children from all over the world, including an American team, for 9 rounds of play both fast and furious. The US sent Annie Weiss, Asuka Nakamura, Daniel Fernandez, and Cindy Tsai. Congratulations to all participants! For games and crosstables, see Disney RapidChess. We will also be posting an exclusive series of coach's reports over the weekend.
