It was an impressive start. In the Absolute Championships five of eight games were decisive. Gulko, and deFirmian fought hard games and were rewarded with a full point, Christiansen was the recipient of a piece and point when Kudrin overlooked a pawn fork and Kaidanov turned down a draw only to lose on time against Ivanov. Serper won a long game where Joel put up mostly token resistance. The only quick draw was in Finegold vs Seirawan.
All the Womens games were hard fought. Marinello won a long grinder against Anna Khan while Belakovskaia produced a nice gem against Groberman. Also winning were Sagalchik and Airapetian.
Although most of the players are veterans, first timers to the event include Jr Champion Igor Shliperman, Gregory Serper (who just met the residency requirements), Elina Groberman (at 16 the youngest player) and Chouchanik Airepetian (a 24 year old from Armenia who’s been in S. Calif for 5 years).
