1999 Interplay U.S. Chess Championships

Bulletin 3: August 25, 1999

(provided by the organizer)

Selected games in PGN

Probably the biggest stunner of the round was Kudrin rolling up Fedorowicz in an 18 move B87 Sicilian. At resignation Fritz is announcing mate in 7. Serper claimed that someone was playing the imposter in his loss to Kaidanov and Benjamin took out Finegold. Ivanov-Dzindzichasvili and Gulko-Yermolinsky were perfunctory draws while Christiansen-Shabalov had a draw that held internet audiences entranced, convinced that Shaba was grinding down Larry.

Among the women, it wasn't a good time to be a leader. Both Marinello and Sagalchik fell. While Belakovskaia played well and had pressure for the material when Khan overstepped the time limit.

The internet coverage and new DGT boards have a ways to go before anyone will be satisfied. In the Christiansen-Shabalov game everything was going well when the board decided to play a bizarre 33rd move as black – the poor operator noted that the computer screen showed Shaba a piece down compared to the actual game and had to go to manual entry. It's been a struggle, but there is no doubt that these boards are the wave of the future.
