The race really tightened up today, seven of the 16 players are tied for first in the Absolute Championships with 2.5 out of 4. Christiansen was limping (the result of a tennis injury) and lost in 29 moves to Yermo. Shliperman played an attractive game against Kudrin to stay undefeated and notch his first win – the internet audience was much appreciative. Shabalov-Gurevich was a long draw while Gulko ground out a win vs Fedorowicz.
In Section 2 Ivanov lost on time in 26 moves against Yasser Seirawan, but he was lost at the time. Finegold sacrificed two pawns for a king side attack against Dzindzichashvili that was quite exciting. One can not help but think he missed something when he allowed 32 h5+ - they drew in 39. Benjamin won over Kaidanov and Serper drew a 63 mover with deFirmian.
In the Womens Championships, Belakovskaia took a rest day by drawing in 14 with Epstein – allowing Sagalchik and Shahade to join the lead. Whether that will give her the time for rest and energy to make another surge or if it will be a strategical mistake is to be seen. Marinello lost a second frustruating game in a row – this time to Sagalchik. Shahade joined the leaders by winning a 76 move ending with R and advanced pawns on the a and b file vs R and a blockading king. After Airapetian flagged a number of the GMs found the position quite interesting – not agreeing at first whether it was won or not (it turns out it is, but not easily in the minute Shahade had remaining). Anna Khan moved up to an even score by winning against Sharon Burtman and Jennie Frenklakh won a nice game against Elina Groberman.
Off the board Ben Finegold gained his first win against Yermo; 6-2 – on the tennis court.
Friday is an off day for the men, leaving the women to battle it out alone.
