Anjelina Belakovskaia has now guaranteed herself a share of her third Womens title; Jennifer Shahade can join her if she beats Anna Khan and Anjelina loses to Olga Sagalchik. Sharon Burtman had an extremely heartbreaking loss when she walked into a mate in 2 after finally getting a winning position. Anna Khan beat Elina Groberman to move into a tie for fourth. The other games were hard fought wins, although Anjelina steered for the draw early on.
In section one, Gulko won against Kudrin to win the section with a dominating score of 5.5, 1.5 ahead of the field. Yermolinsky drew against Shliperman to score 4.0 and take clear second. Boris and Alex now move into the semifinals. Yermo will be playing Serper from section 2, Gregory has to wait for Tuesdays 3 way playoff to find out who his opponent will be. In other games Gurevich won against Christiansen while Fedorowicz and Shabalov had a quick draw; one of the few Shabalov has had.
Section two was a bit tighter. Serper and Dzindzichashvili had a brief draw to clinch a playoff spot for Gregory. One half point behind are Seirawan, Benjamin and Ivanov (all former champions) at four points. Yasser and Joel had an interesting game that ended in a draw, while Alexander won a long game over Ben Finegold. The three of them will play a double round robin on Tuesday to see who gets the last playoff spot and probable fifth post in the next FIDE World Championship. The last game was won by Nick deFirmian against Gregory Kaidanov.
The crowds at the tournament have been light, but as the players leave, they can be assured that the local chess community has had an event they will long remember. A few of the spectators have been a bit too eager and have approached the players for autographs in the middle of their games.
