Ratings on Chess Life Mailing Labels

A player's official USCF rating, published in the most recent Rating List, is printed at the upper left of his mailing label. The official rating is used in USCF rated tournaments. Immediately after the official rating is a player's up-to-date gain or loss, compared to his or her official rating. The above also applies to a player's official Quick rating printed at the top center of the label.

Most labels will look something like this:

  • A. Your official USCF rating, published in the most recent Rating List. TheseRating Lists are sent to official USCF clubs every other month. This is the rating used in tournament play (except for Quick Chess Tournaments).
  • B. Your Up-to-date gain or loss, compared to your official, tournament rating at left. This update appears every month; if your published rating is 0000, the rating to the right of the plus sign is your current rating. Your label gives this information to keep you updated on your important national rating.
  • C. Your rating for Quick Chess Competitions, in which games are played with 10 to 29 minutes for each opponent for the entire game. This rating is kept separate from your regular USCF rating given at the far left. If your Quick Chess rating shows all zeros, try such an event - it's fun!
  • D. Your up-to-date Quick Rating gain or loss, compared to your official Quick rating at left.
  • E. Your Correspondence Rating, resulting from play through the mail or over certain computer networks. This is a separate rating of its own, updated each month. If your Correspondence Rating reads 0000, just telephone USCF to get started in play-by-mail chess. It's a great way to improve as you play officially-rated tournament chess from the comfort of your home!
  • F. Your USCF identification number is given after the letters "ID". Use this number for faster service when you write or telephone USCF or attend a tournament.
  • G. Your membership type; e.g., R=Full Adult (Regular), S=Sustaining, E=Senior, J=Youth, U=Scholastic, Life=Life Members.
  • H. Your current USCF membership expires on the month, day, and year given here. If you are a Life Member, your label will say simply LIFE. Life membership offers many advantages; contact USCF for details and current rates.
  • I. USCF PIN Number, a five digit number that may be used for various purposes.
