Grandmaster Bisguier's Commentary

A natural developing move which defends the d4-pawn and controls the e5-square. Another alternative is 3. Nc3 which however allows 3. ... Bb4 (Which is the start of the Nimzo-Indian Defense) which threatens to create double c-pawns. Karpov usually prefers positions with super sound pawn structures so he avoids the Nimzo-Indian.
