The rook prepares to put pressure on the d4-pawn. Karpov keeps the d-pawn under close surveillance perhaps mindful of the damage it wreaked by advancing in game two. Black leaves his king rook on f8 to look after his f-pawn. His rook placement is more solid than the usual ... Rac8 and ... Rfd8.
