Grandmaster Bisguier's Commentary

One of White's strongest first moves since it controls the central squares c5 and e5 and allows his c1-bishop to develop. While Karpov almost exclusively used 1. e4 in his early career he now shows a preference for this move since it tends to lead more positional play which is his forte.
