Grandmaster Bisguier's Commentary

This is one of White's strongest replies to the Petroff. In a previous game between these two (Linares, 1994 [which was drawn in 67 moves]) the game continued with 3. Nxe5 d6 4. Nf3 Nxe4 5. d4 d5 6. Bd3 Be7 7. 0-0 Nc6 8. Re1 Bg4 which is another common way of playing. White could avoid the Petroff by playing 3. Nc3 which may lead to either the Three or Four Knights Game.
