White secures his king. Note that White cannot "win" a pawn with 7. dxe5 dxe5 8. Qxd8 Rxd8 9. Nxe5? because 9. ... Nxe4 recovers the pawn and gives a slight edge to Black. In the above line, White also has 9. Bg5 which gives him a miniscule edge at no risk. It is significant that Karpov eschews this and selects a more challenging line for both players given his two point lead in the match. |
