It would appear that both players overlooked 35. Rxc8 Rxc8 (Equally poor is 35. ... hxg3 36. Rxa8 gxf2+ [36. ... gxh2+ 37. Kh1!] 37. Bxf2!) 36. Nxf5 Rxf5 37. Qb1 winning a piece, in their haste to make time control.
