Grandmaster Bisguier's Commentary

White wants to develop his Nc3 without allowing the pin by Bb4. The move 4. a3 was often played by former world champion Petrosian, and further popularized by Kasparov.

In Game Three the players chose the same opening, except with colors reversed (Karpov was White in that game). Karpov chose 4. g3, with the intention of contesting the a8-h1 diagonal.
