Grandmaster Bisguier's Commentary

10. dxc5 changes the nature of the position, and gives Black the option of choosing between an isolated d-pawn if he recaptures with a piece, or the "hanging pawns" if 10. ... bxc5.

Hanging pawns are two pawns standing side-by-side, with no connection to the other pawns. The advantage of such pawns is that they control the squares in front of them; the down side is that they may become weak or vulnerable to later attack, especially if one of them is forced to advance.

Another reason for exchanging is to prevent a possible c5-c4 establishing a queenside majority, when White's central majority is restrained by the Bb7.
