Now Black branches off into the Semi-Slav defense. [In the traditional Slav, Black replies dxc4, when White will follow up with a4 (to prevent the move ...b5, when Black might be able to hold the pawn). Then Black could develop his Bishop to f5. The resulting position yields an extra pawn in the center for White, but Black has active pieces.]
