A conservative method of defending his c-pawn. Another alternative is Bg5, when after 5. ...dxc4, 6. e4 b5 7. e5 h6 8. Bh4 g5 9. Nxg5 hxg5 10. Bxg5 leads to a very complicated struggle. The variation was made popular for Black by the great former World Champion Mikhail Botvinnik. Karpov apparently prefers to avoid the complexities of this line, opting for a more conservative, positional type of game. |
