Black's disadvantage would have been minimal after 15. ... e5 16. dxe5 Nxe5 17. Nxe5 Qxe5 18. Qxe5 Rxe5 19. Bf3 Rae8. Perhaps Kamsky wanted to maintain a more complex position with some slight winning chances. After 15. ... e5, he would have had no winning chances. (Black's time used 0:18)
