Black has a choice here: the text is good, and so are 4. ... d5 or 4. ... 0-0.

Note that Black uses his c-pawn to pressure the White center, and that he doesn't block it by an early ... Nc6.

If Black carries out his threat to double White's c-pawns with ... Bxc3, the c5-pawn will restrain the "criminals" (apologies to Nimzowitsch).
