Grandmaster Bisguier's Commentary

Just because Black is making a long-term threat (... Bxc3), doesn't mean that White needs to panic!

By continuing his development and preparing to play Bd3 (eyeing the e4-square), White temporarily postpones Black's threat.

Of course, White could take the view that Black's "threat" is not so dangerous by playing the immediate 4. a3!? (the Samisch Variation), but in that line the tempo White spends allows Black to get good chances to mix it up.

Other moves for White are 4. Qc2 (Capablanca Variation), 4. Qb3 (Spielmann Variation), 4. Nf3 (Kasparov Variation), 4. g3 (Romanishin Variation). Less good is 4. Bd2 (Pomar Variation), because White's pieces are too passively placed to control the e4-square.
