Here White has a major decision to make: should he play Nge2 (to avoid the doubled pawns), or the straight-forward Nf3 (developing the knight to its best square).

In another Nimzo-Indian Defense between these two players (Kamsky-Karpov, Linares 1991), Kamsky chose Nf3 and lost in 84 moves. This is the only other time Gata has allowed Karpov to play the Nimzo-Indian against his 1. d4.
