Grandmaster Bisguier's Commentary

Note first that 38. Nxe4? loses a piece, e.g., 38. ... dxe4 39. Rxc6 exf3+ (zwischenzug - an in-between move) and White can resign.

Also, now the Nf3 can't swing over to d4 (because the g2-pawn would be lost). Maybe Karpov can draw two pawns down, but can Gata??

More importantly, Karpov is taking care to calmly improve his position - that pawn isn't going anywhere!
