This move may look odd to some viewers; the idea can be attributed to Nimzowitsch (who once said that the strength of a move is not in its appearance, but in its idea).

Note that an idea like 4. ... Ba6 is possible because White has already announced his intention to play his own bishop to g2; the first player isn't likely to answer 4. ... Ba6 with a weakening move like 5. e3?! and keep his bishop on f1

If an immediate 4. ... Bb7, White has a number of options for completing his development. After 4. ... Ba6, the first player must attend to the threat against his c4-pawn, cutting down on options. In general, White must take up a slightly less aggressive position after 4. ... Ba6.
