The idea of this retreat is that 6. Bd2, although a developing move, tends to interfere with the smooth alignment of White's forces. White would prefer to play his bishop on the a1-h8 diagonal straight away; repositioning this piece will now cost White additional time. This maneuver (... Bb4+ and ... Be7) is common in other openings, including the Dutch Defense (1. d4 f5). |
