Grandmaster Bisguier's Commentary

Hmm...what to say about this move?

The move is not aimed at speedy development, but the position is closed and quick development is not the most crucial part of the position.

3. ... a6 prepares a later ... b5 and ... Bb7, with an unbalanced position. Plus, it shows that Gata wants to put pressure on Karpov, make him work on his own right away (remember, the world champion may have lost some of his confidence after his less-than-well-played loss in the previous game).
