Grandmaster Bisguier's Commentary

A hard move to figure...

Gata may be playing a type of high-stakes "chicken," aiming to make Karpov's immediate plans a bit messy. For example, 16. Qa4 Qxa4 17. Nxa4 and now 17. ... Rb3!? complicates.

Or, perhaps Black is considering ... Bc6 and ... Ba4, zooming in on White's only weakness (the b3-square).

But what do you do on a move like 16. Bc1, aiming to liquidate with a slightly better game for White? (1:06)
