Grandmaster Bisguier's Commentary

Black chooses to develop a piece and control the e4-square.

Once White has opened with 1. d4, one of his goals for the rest of the game will be to follow with a later e2-e4. Black seeks to prevent this. The second player could also choose a move like 1. ... d5, also restraining e2-e4, but the text is the most flexible (keeping the most options open).
