White chooses a solid developing move here. The immediate 3. Nc3 is perhaps most consistent, but allows Black to play 3. ... Bb4, pinning the knight (the opening known as the Nimzo-Indian Defense). Deciding which openings to allow (and which ones to prevent) is usually a matter of personal preference and style (or preparation). Also, the Nimzo-Indian is one of Karpov's favorite defenses! |
