This move may surprise some players - but it is very logical! After 4. g3, White is rather committed to following with Bg2. Black takes advantage of this fact by striking at the c4-pawn. White is very unlikely to play 5. e3?! because he has other plans for his bishop. Black's idea is that the first player will have to adopt a slightly less aggressive mode of development, protecting the c-pawn with moves like Qc2, Qa4, or b2-b3. |
