Grandmaster Dmitry Gurevich
Grandmaster Dmitry Gurevich was born in Moscow, Russia on September 11, 1956. "Dima" discovered the joys of chess at the age of six in a children's hospital, thus starting a love affair with the game that has lasted to this day.
Gurevich emigrated to New York in 1980 and earned the grandmaster title three years later. Dmitry has had especially good results at the National Open in Las Vegas, sharing first place on numerous occasions i.e., 1985, 1986, 1990, 1991, 1996 and1997. He won the U.S. Open title in both 1988 and 1994 and has been a regular finisher at the top of North American events as well as a regular participant in the U.S. Invitational Championship.
Dima now living in Chicago, has done a lot of teaching at various venues over the years and the aspect of chess that he likes most to emphasize to children is that properly applied intelligence can dominate brute force thinking.
When taking a break from the rigors of chess, Dmitry enjoys literature, music and art films.
