Scholastics: Denker Tournament of H.S. Champions
www.uschess.org is the Official Website of the United States Chess Federation

1999 Information | General Information | History | Games

The Denker Tournament of High School Champions fields High School State Champions from across the United States.  A five round Swiss-style tournament, the Denker is held at the same location as the U.S. Open.  There's a single game each day, which makes participating in the U.S. Open possible.

The Denker is considered a prestigious event.  Scholarships, totaling $1,000 are awarded to the top four finishers.   In 1998 The University of Texas at Dallas awarded two scholarships valued at over $12,000 each.

The Denker is possible through the generous support of International Grandmaster Arnold Denker, winner of the 1944 U.S. Championship and noted chess philanthropist, the U.S. Chess Trust, and Chess-in-the-Schools.

University of Texas at Dallas Scholarship

University of Texas at Dallas offers a four-year, full tuition and fees scholarship!

We are pleased to announce that The University of Texas at Dallas will be offering a four-year, full tuition and fees scholarship, to the top 11th grade (i.e. about to start 12th grade) and below finisher in the 1999 Denker Tournament of High School Champions.

The award is conditional only on the winner meeting the admission requirements of UT-Dallas. UTD is a science and engineering university located in the middle of Richardson's TeleCom Corridor. It was ranked last year by U.S. News and World Report as the 66th best value in the country in higher education. It recently won the National Collegiate Chess League.

Professor Tim Redman, the Director of the Chess Program at UTD will be on hand to make the award in Reno.

Report from the Site

The Arnold Denker Tournament of High School Champions was won by Steven Winer, 18, of Burlington, Vermont and Andrei Zaremba, 17, of Dearborn, Michigan. They each scored 4.5 in the five-round event, held Aug. 15-19 in Reno, NV. A total of 34 state high school champions competed at the Sands Regency, where the 100th U.S. Open was also being held.

Top-rated Patrick Hummell (2455, NV), currently the national high school champion, lost in Round 2 to tenth-ranked Pascal Openshaw (2054). In another upset that round, David John (2275, TX) lost to Allen Bast (1777, MA). Hummel finished clear third with 4 points, while John finished in a tie for fourth with 3.5 points, along with Marcel Martinez (2433, FL), Stanislav Ritvin (2331, PA), Vinay Bhat (2368, CA/N), Joan Santana (2263, NJ) and Riley Yates-Doerr (2079, WA).

Martinez, who won last year's national high school championship, was defeated by Winer in the final round on first board. Shortly after that game ended, Bhat lost to Zaremba on board two.

Zaremba, as the highest scoring player in 11th grade or under, will receive a four-year scholarship to the University of Texas at Dallas. This year UTD is adding a scholarship for the girl in 11th grade or under with the highest score. Karen Birkendahl (1613) of Salt Lake City, Utah won that honor with 2 points.

Mike Nagara directed.

General Information

Eligibility

This event is open to the official and grade-eligible high school chess champion from each state affiliate (states with co-champions must use a tie breaker to decide the eligible player).  Participants must be residents of the state they are representing.  Players must be certified by their state affiliates using the entry form provided by the USCF.   The form must be received by the USCF no later than May 17, 1999.  No substitutions will be allowed after the June 16, 1999 deadline.

Playing Schedule

5-round Swiss, one round per day each morning, Sunday through Thursday, August 15-19.  This schedule is especially convenient, because it allows players an opportunity to participate in the evening rounds of the U.S. Open, and a chance to take advantage of the busy persons special if they are unable to make the first week of the event (details on the busy persons special can be found in the Tournament Life section of Chess Life).

Scholarship Details

The U.S. Trust will award $1000 in Scholarships ($500-250-150-100).  Scholarships are designated for college expenses and will be sent to winners only upon proof of college enrollment (copies of paid bills, or official letters, etc.)  In some cases, prizes will be held in escrow pending receipt of paper documentation.

Expense Money

Through the generosity of Arnold Denker, each participant will receive a minimum of $100 to help defray expenses, plus a share of the remaining funds after tournament expenses.  Expense money will be paid in cash at the conclusion of the event.  A proportion of a player's expense money will be withheld for each forfeited game.  Players expelled from the tournament, or who withdraw without sufficient justification to the Tournament Director forfeit all expense money.

Travel & Accommodations

Players are responsible for their own travel and accommodations.  Players sharing rooms should make their arrangements carefully, as neither the USCF nor the tournament are responsible for any consequences arising from such arrangements.

Emergency Contact Information

Each player must provide the Tournament Director with a phone number of a parent or other responsible adult in case of an emergency.
