GM Peter Svidler is the new World Cup Champion after defeating Alexander
Grischuk in the finals. Svidler, also the reigning Russian Champion, takes home $120,000 for his feat. Svidler was also the one to vanquish our own GM Gata Kamsky, US Champion and the current #1 rated US player on the current FIDE list. The event held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia from August 26th till September 18th, was a 128-player knockout featuring two-game matches leading up to the four-game match finals. Svidler won the first game of the match as Black and went on to draw all three of the remaining games to claim victory. 5879 Also advancing to the Candidates cycle (along with Svidler and Grischuk) is GM Vassily Ivanchuk, who prevailed over fellow Ukrainian GM Ruslan Ponomariov in the third place match. 5880 For more from Khanty-Mansiysk see the official website, chessbase reportage chessvibes coverage and Sam Shankland's earlier CLO piece on defeating GM Leko in round one. |
