Blindfold Bronze for Zatonskih; A Third Silver for Nakamura |
December 20, 2012 | |
Reigning US Chess Champion Nakamura won his third silver at the World Mind Sport Games in Beijing, China for blindfold behind GM Levon Aronian of Armenia. Nakamura also earned silver in rapid and blitz competitions, and was the only player to earn medals in every single division.
Here are two of his blindfold victories. 6619 6622 Gata Kamsky scored 4.5/7 finish for joint third and notched some nice victories against GMs Karjakin and Leko. 6620 6621 Kamsky narrowly missed out on a bronze medal on tiebreak to Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan. Four-time US Women's Champion Anna Zatonskih earned bronze in the women's division while Hou Yifan took gold. Among Anna's victims was 2600+ GM Humpy Koneru of India. 6618 Zatonskih showed off her blindfold prowess in simultaneous exhibitions in Saint Louis in 2009 and 2010. See the throwback photo from her 2009 exhibition at the Contemporary Art Museum Saint Louis, which preceded her 8.5-0.5 result at that year's US Women's Championships. Congrats to the American players for their outstanding results in the blindfold division! |
