Barton Dean Wormington (1952-2011)

Barton Dean Wormington, an ex-USCF member and former middle school and high school chess coach, died January 22, 2011 in Longview, Washington, while visiting family and friends. He was 58.

Mr. Wormington was born June 2, 1952 in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of George and Bethel Barton Wormington, and had lived his early years in Omaha, where he attended local public schools. He later lived in Kelso, Washington, where he attended high school. He received a bachelor's degree in earth science and biology from Western Washington University and earned a master's degree in secondary science education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1973 to 1977.

Mr. Wormington started teaching in public schools in 1981. He spent the last 15 years teaching 8th-grade science at the Russell Middle School in Omaha before retiring in June 2010. He was the school's chess coach and also the chess coach at Millard High School, which competed in metro, state and national championships.
