David Nelson Hydorn, a USCF life member from Fredericksburg, Virginia, died on May 16, 2009 in VCU Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia. He was born and raised in New Jersey, graduating with a bachelor of science degree from Rutgers University there. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1963 to 1967 as a pilot and a flight instructor, flying T-34, T-28 and T-2A aircraft. Mr. Hydorn was a pilot for United Airlines for 32 years, retiring in 2001. While a pilot for United, he opened the Rocking Horse toy store in Fredericksburg in 1982. Together with his wife he continued his avocation by opening the Rocking Horse Gallery in Fredericksburg, specializing in artist teddy bears and dolls. Mr. Hydorn was an avid chess player and became a USCF life member. His first USCF-rated tournament was the Spotsylvania Open in Fredericksburg on Sept. 16, 1995. His last tournament was the 41st Liberty Bell Open in Philadelphia in mid-January 2009. Among the numerous tournaments he played in were the World Open, Atlantic Open, Virginia Open and Virginia Closed. He is survived by his wife of more than 21 years, Faylee Lavender Hydorn; two sons, a daughter, two stepdaughters and nine grandchildren. David N.
