Hans Mager, 81, of San Luis Obispo died at home Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, with his family at his side. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lady Family- Sutcliffe Cemetery in San Luis Obispo, the Rev. Russ Gordon of Mount Carmel Lutheran Church officiating. Mr. Mager was born May 28, 1918 in Tallinn, Estonia. He lived in Estonia and attended the Technical University of Tallinn until late 1943, when impending Soviet occupation drove him to Finland, where he served in the Finnish Navy. From there he moved on to Sweden and lived there for five years while attending the Royal Technical University in Stockholm, from where he graduated. While in Sweden he was reunited with his fiancee, Irina, whom he married there in 1947. In 1949 he came to the United States and became one of the original instructors that year in the then new school of architecture at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He taught there for 39 years in the department of architectural engineering until retiring in 1988. While on sabbatical leave during his teaching career, he also attended the Technical University of Vienna, Austria, from where he received a doctor of technical sciences degree in 1980. He was also a licensed civil engineer. He enjoyed nature, particularly the ocean and forests, was an avid chess player, and enjoyed the camaraderie of students and fellow professors in his teaching career. He is survived by his wife, Irina Mager; daughter Ingrid Irina Mager; son Hans Fred Mager; sister Daisy Pello of Tallinn, Estonia; niece Tiiu Karp of Tallinn, Estonia; great-nephew Toomas Pello; great-niece Moonika Pello; and grandchildren Crystala Milton (Mager), Jane Ashley Mager, Hans Juri Mager and Kate Ellen Mager.
