Indrek Martinson, a former USCF member from Toledo, Ohio, died November 14, 2009. He was 71. 

He was born December 26, 1931 in Tartu, Estonia, and had lived many years in Sweden before immigrating to the United States. 

Mr. Martinson was a world-renowned expert on accelerator-based atom physics. He earned a doctorate from the University of Stockholm in 1971. He was emeritus professor and director of the Institute of Atomic Physics at the University of Lund in Sweden. He was a former chair of the physics section of the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences and an adjunct professor at the University of Toledo in Ohio. 

Besides being a physicist, Dr. Martinson had an intense interest in chess. When international masters visited Stockholm, he often entertained them. He is reported to have drawn Bobby Fischer in a simultaneous exhibition. 

Besides chess, Dr. Martinson had also a keen interest in and knowledge of music and sports. 

He is survived by his wife, Evi Martinson; three daughters, Liisa, Tiina and Maria; and three grandchildren.
