Kevin M. Severance (1959-2010)
 
Kevin McIver Severance, a former USCF member from Tucumcari, New Mexico, died January 1, 2010 of injuries sustained in an automobile crash in Clayton, New Mexico. He was 50. He was born July 23, 1959 in Columbia, South Carolina, the son of John McIver Severance and the late Annie (Tisdale) Severance, and graduated there from Dreher High School. He later earned bachelor's and master's degrees of science in physics and geology from the University of South Carolina.

Mr. Severance was a geologist for many years for the Roadrunner Logging Company, working on wells in New Mexico, Colorado, Texas and Wyoming. Recently, he was teaching math and science at Tucumcari High School.

He was an avid chess player and once last competed in a tournament sponsored by the Northern Schools Chess League in Montezuma, New Mexico. He enjoyed planting and caring for trees.

Besides his father in Irmo, South Carolina, he is survived by his wife, Fidelia Severance of Tucumcari; a sister, Karen Powell of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina; a brother, Keith M. Severance of Boise, Idaho; four aunts, an uncle, and many cousins. His funeral was arranged by the Chavez Funeral Home in Santa Rosa, New Mexico. Burial was in Montoya, New Mexico.
