Lance Osadchey (1939-2013)

Lance Osadchey, a former USCF member from Bradford, Vermont, died at home on August 4, 2013. He was 74. He grew up on a farm in upstate New York and when he was 15 years old went to college at Syracuse University. At Syracuse, he was a bowman on the varsity rowing team and a member of the team that won the IRA National Championship for freshman crews. After attending medical school at Syracuse, he served as a captain battalion surgeon for the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army Paratroopers. After military service, Dr. Osadchey served in the emergency room and in his private practices in Connecticut and Vermont.

He enjoyed music, especially rock 'n roll and the band 8084. In his 15 years of retirement, he enjoyed skiing, playing chess, and writing several books, including the novel "Lakota." He was also a citizen scientist, with interest in astronomy and physics. He joined the USCF in December 2009, when he played in his first rated tournament in Hanover, New Hampshire. He later played in Middlebury, Vermont. His third and final USCF-rated event was the Continental Chess Association-sponsored 22nd Vermont Resort Open in March 2011 in Fairlee.

Dr. Osadchey is survived by his children, Mark, Tanya and Kerstin; seven grandchildren, Miranda, Jack, Reilly, Phoebe, Trevor, Savanna and Landon; and a brother, Bruce Osadchey.
