M. Brooke Halsey (1983-2009)

Macdonald Brooke Halsey, a graduate of Harvard University and a former USCF member from Vershire, Vermont, died Tuesday, November 17, 2009, in Vermont. He was 26.

Mr. Halsey attended The Thacher School in Ojai, California before starting college at Princeton in the fall of 2000. Prior to studying at Princeton, he joined the USCF and played in his first and only tournament: the Down East Open on June 24-25, 2000 in Portland, Maine. He later studied for a semester at the Center for Northern Studies in Wolcott, Vermont before transferring to Harvard in the fall of 2004. He completed his Harvard studies in December 2006 with a degree in biology.

After graduation he joined an engineering research lab at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.

But six months later, he traded his lab coat to pursue his love of the outdoors, later founding a tree service company in Vermont called Halsey Treenail. Mr. Halsey volunteered as a firefighter in the town of Vershire. Coming from a family of linguists, he was fluent in Mandarin among other languages and was also interested in Asian culture. He once wrote a physics paper combining his interests in linguistics and science, explaining Einsteinian theory in Chinese.

He is survived by his father, mother and five sisters.
