Maurice Neveu (1929-2011)

Maurice C. Neveu, a former USCF member from Silver Creek, New York, died March 29, 2011 in Lake Shore Nursing Home. He was 82.

Born Feb. 3, 1929 in Nashua, New Hampshire, the son of Oscar D. and Corona (Casavant) Neveu, he graduated from Nashua High School in 1947. He attended Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. as well as the University of New Hampshire in Durham, where he received a bachelor of science in chemistry in 1952 and a master's degree in chemistry in 1955. He earned a doctorate in physical organic chemistry in 1959 at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He taught chemistry at Ohio Northern University in Ada and Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia from 1959 to 1964, and the State University of New York at Fredonia from 1964 to 1990. Besides teaching, he carried out scientific research at various places, including Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., and Tufts University in Medford, Mass.

He started playing in USCF-rated tournaments in 1991 and competed in 17 tournaments, including events in Buffalo and Syracuse, N.Y., from 1991 to 1995. Besides chess, he loved classical music and tennis. He was also a movie buff.

He leaves his wife of 55 years, Lucille A. Neveu of Silver Creek; three sons, Paul Neveu of Kent, Ohio; Albert Neveu of Oswego, N.Y.; and Daniel Neveu of Buffalo, N.Y.; a daughter, Elise Fila of Williamsville, N.Y.; three grandchildren; and a sister, Muriel Francoeur of Nashua, N.H. His funeral was held April 1. Burial was in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Silver Creek.
