Nicolas Cox (1979-2010) I’m writing with much sadness to inform the chess world of the untimely death of Nicolas (Nick) Cox. Nick was just 31, my youngest brother, and he left this world much too soon. Never a renowned or greatly accomplished player, Nick nonetheless loved the game and truly enjoyed meeting the many people he competed against playing it. He especially enjoyed his time with the Elizabeth (CO) High School and Terre Haute (IN) chess clubs and the friends he made at both places. Nick’s biggest success came just a few short weeks before his death winning clear first (4.5-.5) at the 2010 Indianapolis Open. Here’s a game representative of him from that tournament. While his games, much like mine, were far from being works of art, he did play interesting, energetic chess. He was a very clever player, always willing to take risks and venture into uncharted waters to keep from being tied down in a passive position. He will truly be missed.
