Oliver J. Wisner (1928-2009)
Oliver J. Wisner, a USCF member from Watertown, New York, died Wednesday, September 30, at his law office in Watertown. Hr had practiced law for more than 40 years and was currently practicing at the law offices of Jack C. Scordo and Oliver J. Wisner. He had also been a partner with the Wisner & Scanlon law firm and with attorney John Hallett. Born December 30, 1928 in Evans Mills, NY, the son of Carl A. and Mildred L. (Covey) Wisner, he attended local schools and graduated from Watertown High School in 1946. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He became a certified public accountant in 1959 and was admitted to practice law in the state of New York in 1967. He was appointed estate tax attorney for Jefferson County in 1975. He graduated with a doctorate in jurisprudence from Syracuse University Law School in 1984. He was last active as a tournament chess player in the mid-2000s, when he participated in events at the Watertown Chess Club. His last USCF-rated event was the Holiday Invitational Tour at the Watertown CC in January 2005. Besides chess, Mr. Wisner enjoyed collecting coins and speaking several different foreign languages. He was also interested in history and enjoyed reading old newspapers. The funeral was held October 6 at the Bossuot-Lundy Funeral Home in Carthage, followed by burial in Sunnyside Cemetery in Naumburg.
