A strong International with
GM and IM norm possibilities in the San Francisco area will kick off 2012. The Northern California International (January 2-8, 2012), presented by NorCal House of
Chess, will have two sections, a GM-norm Round Robin and a Swiss, both with GM
and IM norm possibilities. The Swiss event is open to any player with a FIDE Rating of at least 2000 and now is the best time to enter as a special lower entry fee is being offered until the beginning of August. This will be one of the very few events in the US to offer norm opportunities along with a fairly relaxed playing schedule, with the majority of the event having only one round a day. With this easy schedule, players should also have plenty of opportunity to tour the many sites of the Bay Area while escaping the cold weather that will be consuming most of the country. If you would like to participate in the tournament in any way, contact the organizers Arun Sharma and Ted Castro. The previous version of this event, won by GM Loek van Wely produced an astounding seven norms along with four new titles.
