Official Press Release August 17, 2009 Joan DuBois, [email protected] Texas Tech’s IM Gergely Antal triumphs to take 1st place in the Open; UT Brownsville has 2 section winners (again)! (Crossville, TN) IM Gergely Antal of Texas Tech proved equal to the challenges of four other IMs to claim the first place title at World Chess Live Tournament of College Champions. How formidable were these top college men? Of the four IMs, who played in the concurrent U.S. Open, they finished 2nd, 13th, 14th, and 18th out of 456 entries! Winning the Open section is no small feat. UT Brownsville for the second year in a row had two section winners: Arturo Gracia, Jr (U2100) and Russell Trevino (U1700). 13 colleges were represented at the tournament. This U.S. Chess Federation (USCF), national championship six-round event is played concurrently with the US Open Chess Championship, which moves from one location to another each year. This year all events were held at the Indianapolis Marriott East in Indianapolis, Indiana.
