(Crossville, TN) – Super GM Fabiano Caruana has expressed interest in playing in this year’s US Chess Championship. Contrary to web reports, he has not yet received an official invitation. The US Chess Federation has an agreement with the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis to host the 2013 edition but official invitations have not yet been issued to players. “We expect the invitation process (as adminstered by the Saint Louis Chess Club) to begin early in 2013 and it will likely be based off of the March 2013 USCF rating list,” said USCF President Ruth Haring when contacted about online reports indicating some invitations were already sent. Currently ranked #5 in the world, GM Caruana was born in Miami but has dual Italian and American citizenship. He has been playing chess professionally for Italy. “USCF is pleased at GM Caruana’s interest in playing for the US Championship,” said Haring. “His participation would add to an already strong field. We are looking forward to an exciting US Championship next year!” Look for upcoming details on the US Chess Championship and Caruana's potential participation on CLO and on the Saint Louis Chess Club website. |
