Chess Camp Encourages Mastery in Chess & Charity Print E-mail

The Grandmaster Summer Chess Camp held at Barrington High School continues a tradition of service through learning. Each of the chess events that are held with GM Shulman highlight a specific charity that the children, families and friends can contribute towards. This tradition has become a favorite feature of the chess community because students enjoy being responsible for helping the charity and they play a role in the selection process of the particular charity. In keeping with this unique tradition; a small portion of the proceeds from this Summer Chess Camp were donated to a local environmental organization called Citizens For Conservation that focuses on "Saving Living Space for Living Things." North Barrington School students Laila Franklin and Jack Bradley were proud to be Project Leaders for the service arm of the Summer Chess Camp. They were excited about their leadership role and distributed literature about the program while taking time to inform other students about "being good to the earth" as stated by Jack Bradley.

The sessions will feature GM Yury Shulman, GM Alex Onishuk, GM Gregory Kaidanov and GM Mesgen Amanov. The Grandmasters who taught at this camp were originally from Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Russia. A second session of GM Yury Shulman's Summer Chess Camp will be offered July 12 - 16 at Barrington High School and by popular request a similar chess camp is being offered at Quest Academy August 2 - 6.
