The tournament will bring together young players who will compete in four person teams that are divided by age. “This exciting tournament will provide a chance for both the students from St. Petersburg and the students from the United States to meet in a friendly international competition,” said Mikhail Korenman, one of the tournament organizers. The tournament is sponsored jointly by the International Education and Cultural Services (INTECUS), the Anatoly Karpov International School of Chess, the U.S. Chess Federation, and the Kansas Scholastic Chess Federation. Each team will be comprised of four students who will compete in five different age categories; the oldest being 18 and the youngest category for those under age 10. On Friday, April 1, the tournament will commence at 6:00 p.m. with a Blitz tournament at the Anatoly Karpov Chess School in Lindsborg, Kansas. In Blitz, the two competing players each have five minutes to complete their game. Opening ceremonies will occur at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 2, at the tournament playing site, which is the Best Western, 2211 East Kansas, McPherson, Kansas. “I think this is an outstanding chance for students from different countries to get to know one another in a friendly setting,” said Marck R. Cobb, president of the International Chess Institute of the Midwest (ICIM), who operates the Anatoly Karpov School of Chess in Lindsborg. FIDE Master Tom Brownscombe will direct the three-day event that is expected to draw over 100 players. Brownscombe is a member of the U.S. Chess Federation’s Scholastic Council.
