University of Texas at Dallas “A Team” Wins 2007 Pan-American Chess Championships

(Miami, FL) Instead of relaxing during the holiday season, over 120 of the best collegiate chess players in the Americas battled over six grueling rounds lasting up to five hours each over the weekend of December 27-30, 2007. In the end, the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) “A Team” took first place at the Pan-American Intercollegiate Chess Tournament, which was held at Miami Dade College in Miami, Florida.

UTD's dominating performance--earning 5.5 of a possible 6 match points (1 point per win and ½ point per draw)--included a critical victory in the penultimate round against their perennial rival, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).  With the victory comes a spot in the Final Four of collegiate chess, where they are the defending national champions.
