This is the obituary of USCF life member Sally L. (Harrigan) Howes, who died on June 12, 2006 - one day before her 77th birthday - in Holyoke, MA. She became the first female president of the Massachusetts Chess Association in the 1970s. The most notable tournaments she organized and directed in Western Massachusetts were the well-attended Eastfield Mall Opens in Springfield, MA, in the 1970s.
