Chess Buzz for August 22, 1997
This Week's
Lighter Side: Biological Clock?
Last week we covered a fairly serious topic: who are the favorites for the 1997 Interplay US Chess Championship? in our "Wildcards and Cinderella Players" article. And this week's Fun Fact has some interesting trivia on GM Walter Browne and other top players who have won the prestigious US Championship not just once, but several times. (Browne himself is a 6-time winner.) But we decided this week in the buzz to get back to lighter fare. The following (quoted by permission)is by Robin Jackson, and first appeared in 1995.
"Biological Clock"
Don't speak to me of Polgars. Don't mention Vera M.
(I really don't play very much like any one of them.)
Don't talk to me of hormones, or math and science scores
--I've heard the line from Darwin and the one from Freud on wars.
I'm just another player, with another game to play;
the round's in seven minutes and I haven't time to stay.
So ask me out to dinner, and maybe I'll say, 'Yes'...
but please don't ask me anymore why women don't play chess!
